Piano Man II by Justin Bu
focused on the hourglass
we lose sight of the sand
distorted views have come to pass
as fingers stroke the hand
of time, kept in a bottle
sealed, to foster our delusions
reality, so well concealed
competes with grand illusions.
Note: This was first posted in 2007. For whatever reason it has become the most read post on my blog. For that reason I decided to repost it.

Well, it is nicely paced and very pleasant on the mind. I can see why it might become popular. Congrats on that – and thanks for sharing it.
Love the picture, too.

I love the juxtaposition of the picture with the poem. The poem stands alone, quite beautifully, and contains simple but enormous truth. Thanks.
Thank you! I enjoyed your work as well. ~Shirley

From first line to last, you keep revealing truths that can get lost in the song. Isn’t that the purpose of most music, ‘to foster our delusions’? This piece made me immediately think of Ray Charles. Whose music better than his to compete with our grand illusions? This is wonderful, Shirley, capable of invoking comment and conversation on several different planes… just like the music itself.
